Steve Hawes

When you finish the novel you wonder how something so unflinching can also be heartening. Ruba is a kind of Orpheus, ready to descend into hell to rescue someone she loves. And she does just that. She charms her way into hell. She confronts the agonies of war, loses innocent hope and comes back with something else - a promise of healing.

That's what the film has to do. And, like the novel, it has to find lightness within the disasters of war: it has to be funny.
