The fact that we live the events of the novel with and through its ten year-old heroine is what made Monica Solon want to adapt it. Her father’s disconnection from her and her family is far more unsettling than the shelling outside the house. And it shows through a series of dramatic images how a child struggles to make sense of fragmented information, survives and adapts.
